As predicted earlier in the thread by yours truly, Bryce Harper did go to Philly. It certainly did not seem that way because it took him so long to accept their offer. The contract even exceeded the one offered to him by the Nats in terms of both length (13 to 10 years) and $$$ (330 million as opposed to 300). Makes you wonder what Mike Trout will get when he becomes a free agent should the Angels decided not to sign him long term before it gets to that point.

The acquisitions of Harper, McCutchen, Segura, and Realmuto along with their returning position players Hoskins, Franco, Hernandez, Herrera gives Philly a potent starting lineup. But it is the pitching that will ultimately determine how far the Phillies will go in 2019 and beyond. And their staff as presently constituted is highly questionable at best. What we can say for sure is that the NL East is very competitive with the Phillies, Braves, Nationals, and Mets all expected to be in the hunt. And with Harper going to a divisional rival, if nothing else it amps up the Philly-Washington rivalry.

I know rep Omar in Congress said " it's all about the Benjamin's " when discussing Israel buying Congress but can she might have also meant that about Machado ending up in all places San Diego ?

Good luck Manny , you flamed out in last yrs WS as the Dodgers went back to WS losers, now as a Padre you won't have to worry about a national stage, the San Diego Padres won't even snag a one game Selig gimmick Wild Card come October...Back to you Curt Gowdy, Tony Kubek.

Hunter Pence a Texan native has had a smoking hot exhibition season thus making the Rangers roster as a spare outfielder / DH while the Giants team he won 2 WS rings with disposed of him.

Mike Minor who had a nice 2018 on a terrible Texas team will start opening day 2019 with Lance Lynn Edinson Volquez Drew Smiley Shelby Miller rounding out a totally revamped rotation. Joey Gallo Nomar Mazzara Elvis Andrus and company can knock some runs across. Hope Springs eternal hoping this is not another wretched season.

Speaking of the AL West, good to see baseball that counts back again with the start of the two game Japan series. Although it will not feel like such until we have the U.S. ballparks and the one Canada MLB park open for meaningful business beginning next Thursday. Good to see Ichiro (a sure to be Hall of Famer) back in a Mariners uniform playing in his native country. As for Game 1, not a whole lot of pitching on display as the M's outslug the A's 9-7. Might be the last or one of the last times you will see a rebuilding Mariners squad in first place this season.

Trout Harper Machado type contracts to me are rather opposite of what it takes to build and build solidly. Artie Moreno in Anaheim has gotten zero on his investment for Albert Pujols. Let's see if Trout gets them any closer.

Several yrs ago the Astros took baseball by storm by having young homegrown talent for the most part win Houston a WS ring. If you pay a Harper / Trout type player 30-40 million a yr how's the budget look for pitching and to fill out the rest of the 25 man roster.

Mookie Betts probably the next budget busting hard baller on the horizon and I'm sure Boston will pony up to for nothing else keep the guy out of pinstripes.
